One Sunday night I had a very interesting dream. In my dream there was a baby that had been abandoned by his parents. I took the baby in to care for him. I tried to get my friends to help me take care of the baby, but no one could see the need for the effort except me. So, I committed to take care of the baby by myself. The dream stuck with me and I wondered about its meaning. That week Uncle Bro was undergoing outpatient surgery and would be staying at Aunt Dorothy’s house for a few days. By this time Uncle Bro had joined my church, rededicated his life to Christ, was no longer drinking any alcohol and living a healthy life. Wendell, Uncle Bro’s boss, had offered him a full time job as the morning cook for Donnellson’s Catering. Uncle Bro would start the new position the next week after his surgery. By Friday, Uncle Bro was feeling better and decided to work a catering job with Wendell that Sat. Sunday morning Uncle Bro called me. He wanted me to come by the house and pick up his tithes and offerings to turn in for him. He was not going to church that day, opting to stay home and rest after working hard on Sat. He was still not 100% after the surgery. He was to start working the full time position on Monday, and he wanted to be rested for that. That Sunday night I had another dream about the baby. However, in this dream the baby died. No matter what I did I was not able to save him. That Monday morning, I received a call from Kim Donellson. Uncle Bro had not shown up for work and not called. It was going on 11:00AM and that was not like him. They thought I should go and check up on him. I immediately left my office and headed to Uncle Bro’s house. I called Aunt Dorothy on my way there. She said she would come as well. I was the first person to arrive. I had a key to the house so I knocked on the door and then let myself in. I could hear Uncle Bro’s radio playing gospel music in his bedroom. I called his name several times, but there was no answer. In the hallway there was a chair with clothes laid across it where Uncle Bro was drying them with the floor furnace in front of his bedroom door. I opened the door and called his name. Uncle Bro was laid face up on the side of the bed. I could tell he was dead. His dog, Mojo, was in the room with him and the radio was still playing. I told Mojo to come on and we went outside. I just broke down and cried. I tried to call 911, but my phone would not work. So, I called my friend Karen who was substitute teaching that day. She contacted the police and gave them the information. A few minutes later Aunt Dorothy drove up. She said she thought Uncle Bro might be dead, and was trying to contact me to tell me not to go in the house until she got there. It was Feb. 13, the day before Uncle Bro’s birthday. That evening Aunt Dorothy told me that she had visited Uncle Bro Sunday evening. She said they had a very nice visit. Aunt Dorothy wanted to help him decorate the house. It was coming up on a year since he moved in and when he started the new position on Monday he would be making enough money to cover all the expenses of the house. He invited her to diner on his Birthday, which would be Tuesday, Feb. 14. He was going to take her out, on him, as a thank you for all the years of support. It had been a few months since Frasier had passed away, so Aunt Dorothy asked Uncle Bro if he would get another roommate. He told her no. He wanted to do for someone else what I had done for him. He was going to find someone who was ready to turn their life around. He was going to allow them to stay in the extra bed room for one year and he would pay all the expenses. He wanted to make them an offer from God, to come back home. When I spoke those words to Uncle Bro, I thought God wanted him to come back to the family of Christ. That He wanted me to help Uncle Bro so that we could start this great ministry together. I would give him the financial support while he was able to reach the unsaved or back slider for Christ. In reality, God knew that this was going to be Uncle Bro’s final year on earth and He was giving him one more chance to make it home. It was also my test in obedience. I was saying that all I had belonged to God, this experience allowed me to put my words in action. Although, I was sad to see Uncle Bro go home to Glory, I am proud that God allowed me to be used in His plans. To me, this is what ministry is all about. Those of you who have read the story of Uncle Bro’s House, I pray that when God tell you to do something that sounds a little unreasonable that you remember this Blog and make the Life Choice. The End… By: Angela Green Founder Ambassadors of Memphis Choices: Uncle Bro's House Part 10 06/21/2011
After Frasier passed away several of Uncle Bro’s friends asked to move in with him. They could see the changes in him and I suspected they were looking for a change in their own lives. Uncle Bro was very particular about who he would allow to move in with him. I told him he did not have to get a roommate. I would be there to help always. After some consideration he told me that he wanted to live alone for while. I never really visited Uncle Bro much, even after he moved into the Lakeview House. The last time I remember just hanging out at Uncle Bro’s house was this one summer when he picked my sister and I up for an afternoon visit. I don’t remember much about the visit except that he took us to get something to eat and then we hung out at his apartment until Aunt Dorothy came to pick us up. I believe that was during the time that he was a faithful member of his church and had a nice job. After Uncle Bro moved into Lakeview, I remember the moment things changed. I remember that it was the night of the Super Bowl. I was invited to a Super Bowl party at Club Emotions on Brooks Road. The club was right around the corner from Uncle Bro’s house on Lakeview. I am not really a club person and the smoke was getting the best of me. At half time I told my friend that I needed to go and check up on my Uncle. He was preparing to have surgery in a couple of days. When I arrived, Uncle Bro was watching the game in his room. He told me to come on in and pull a chair in his room to watch the half time show. I got the chair, took off my jacket and shoes and propped my feet up. He told me to bring some chips and drinks from the kitchen for us to snack on. Uncle Bro had this gallon jug of water next to his bed. He told me he had to drink it all before the surgery. We laughed because every few minutes he had to get up to go to the bathroom. After the game was over I got up to leave. When I was driving home I realized that was the first time since I was a little girl that felt comfortable spending time at Uncle Bro’s house. It was a feeling that brought a smile to my face. To Be Continued .... By: Angela Green Founder Ambassadors of Memphis Choices: Uncle Bro's House Part 9 04/26/2011
When Uncle Bro and Frasier moved into the house, it was easier for Frasier to find work. He was often hired as day labor or would cut yards. Whenever he made anything he would give me something for allowing him to live in the house. He was also the one who suggested that he and Uncle Bro cut the yards of my investment properties to help out. After several months of living in the house, Frasier became ill. He started losing a lot of weight and was very weak. It was hard not to notice a robust man whither down to almost skin and bones. By this time Uncle Bro was working steady in his part time job with Wendell. It was like he and Frasier had changed places. There were many times that Uncle Bro stayed home to take care of Frasier. I asked Uncle Bro if he thought Frasier was saved. He said they really didn’t talk about it much. However, Frasier did make the comment that he would not have been able to live with Uncle Bro if he was not OK with Christianity. Uncle Bro liked to listen to Christian music and teaching tapes. He would play them often in the house. One day Frasier had to be rushed to the VA Hospital. He never returned home. I hated that I had not said anything directly to Frasier about Christ before he passed away. I don’t know what Frasier heard while living with Uncle Bro and his Christian music and teaching tapes. I just prayed that in this case, it was enough save a soul. To Be Continued … By: Angela Green Founder Ambassadors of Memphis, Inc. Choices: Uncle Bro's House Part 8 04/22/2011
One day Uncle Bro asked me to pick him up for church. He wanted to pay his tithes. At the time I was a member of World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church and we had two services. I worked in the media ministry so I had to attend both services. I was happy that he asked, so there was no way I was not going to make it work. I told Uncle Bro that I would pick him up after the first service, but I would not be able to sit with him because I had to run one of the cameras. Soon this became our normal Sunday routine. All of the members of the media ministry knew my Uncle Bro on sight. When you are in the control room, you can see the whole audience from various angles. We caught Uncle Bro and others sleeping in service on many Sunday mornings. It was a running joke in the control room. One Sunday while I was in the control room during service, our Director, Tramaine said to me, “Angela, isn’t that your Uncle walking down the aisle?” I looked at the main monitor and saw that Uncle Bro had just joined church. I had no idea. To Be Continued .... While I was helping my Uncle Bro, I was still running the law firm and investing in real estate. I was able to sell my first investment property as well as purchase a larger one with two other partners. In all I was paying mortgages and utilities on three houses simultaneously. Looking back, I know God told me to help my Uncle Bro. I am not so sure about the rest of my investment activities. After a while I started to feel a strain on my finances. I was still tithing to my church (God) which is what I believe saw me through this period of time. However, I must admit that I was really pushing for my Uncle Bro to start working consistently. Uncle Bro was doing so well with Wendell that he asked Uncle Bro to work part time in his cafeteria. The only problem was that the cafeteria was located inside a government building and everyone who worked there had to complete an application and pass an extensive background check. We were not so sure that Uncle Bro would get approved, but we knew we had to at least try. The first thing that we did was pull his record and start dealing with all the outstanding warrants on his record. Uncle Bro had several J-walking tickets and another for not having a leash on his dog. When he did not show up for court; the tickets turned into bench warrants and started accruing fees. Aunt Dorothy paid one warrant off; however, Uncle Bro would not allow her to pay the other ones. He could do 10 days or so of time in jail to clear the others and decided to do that. The next obstacle we encountered was trying to account for his work history and living history for the last ten years as well as identify references. For a couple of those years Uncle Bro was on the streets, so there was a gap in his living history. He also rarely kept a job, so the work history was spotty to say the least. The references were not much of an issue. We decided that the best course of action would be to tell the truth about everything, type the application so that it was neat and pray for the best. After the application was submitted Uncle Bro received a phone call from one of the investigators. They talked for about an hour or so and Uncle Bro told her about how he was trying to put his life back together and what I was doing to help him. He said it was strange, but every time she called he would have just place a fresh $10 on his pre-paid phone. She called him on at least two occasions and both times they talked for over an hour. Back in Memphis, the contract supervisor for the government building was working with Uncle Bro as well. Her name was Jeri. Jeri is an older Caucasian woman with a bubbly personality. She encouraged Uncle Bro to submit the application. Uncle Bro would say, “If it’s meant to be, I will get approved”. To everyone’s surprise Uncle Bro was approved. It was not until after Uncle Bro had been working for a few weeks, did I learn that Jeri was one of the Elders for my church. That’s when I realized that God was in full control of this situation. When Uncle Bro and Frasier moved in the house all they had were a few clothes and not much else. I purchased a refrigerator but I did not have the funds to furnish a whole house. I had just furnished a new office. After Aunt Dorothy got on the case, Uncle Bro had a queen size bedroom set for his room, a twin bedroom set for Frasier’s room, a washer and dryer set, lazy boy chair and a card table with four chairs for the kitchen. Once they were settled into the house, Uncle Bro and Frasier began to cut the lawn at my house down the street as well as at their house to help out. It was easier for Frazier to find work, so he would give me something every now and then. I appreciated the help, but I have to admit that I wanted Uncle Bro to find employment. One day my friend Wendell gave me a call. Wendell is a trained chef with his own catering business. We were also members of the same church, World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church (WOOMC). Wendell was trying to get in touch with Elder King, who was over the Marketplace Ministry at WOOMC. I worked with Elder King in the ministry, so Wendell thought he would tell me about his idea. He had just gotten the contract to run the cafeteria at a government building on Democrat Rd. He was having trouble finding good people to work for him. He asked me if the Marketplace Ministry had thought of putting a job board together for businesses in the church to advertise their job openings. He knew that there were members looking for employment just as he was looking to hire some employees. I told him that I would pass that suggestion on to Elder King. Then I asked Wendell if he would consider giving my Uncle Bro a try. I told him that I was trying to help my Uncle get back on his feet, as well as all of my Uncle’s past. I asked him to try Uncle Bro out on one catering job and if he did not work out, there would be no hard feelings on my part. Wendell agreed. I told Uncle Bro about the opportunity. He was very excited. Aunt Dorothy gave him some money and I took him to Value City to get him a white shirt, black slacks and a belt. That Sunday I picked Uncle Bro up to take him to the location of the party that Wendell was catering. I arranged for Wendell to bring him home after the event. When I picked Uncle Bro up he had shaved his head bald, shaved his face and trimmed his mustache. He looked like a million bucks. To Be Continued ...
